“Everyone’s favourite ogre is back in this hilarious stage spectacle, based on the Oscar-winning smash hit film and outrageous Broadway musical.
Beauty is in the eye of the ogre in Shrek The Musical JR., based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film and fantastic Broadway musical. It’s a “big bright beautiful world” as everyone’s favorite ogre, Shrek, leads a cast of fairytale misfits on an adventure to rescue a princess and find true acceptance. Part romance and part twisted fairy tale, Shrek JR. is an irreverently fun show with a powerful message for the whole family.
Once upon a time, in a far away swamp, there lived an ogre named Shrek. One day, Shrek finds his swamp invaded by banished fairytale misfits who have been cast off by Lord Farquaad, a tiny terror with big ambitions. When Shrek sets off with a wisecracking donkey to confront Farquaad, he’s handed a task — if he rescues feisty princess Fiona, his swamp will be righted. Shrek tries to win Fiona’s love and vanquish Lord Farquaad, but a fairytale wouldn’t be complete without a few twists and turns along the way.
With abundant opportunities for imaginative sets and costumes, and a host of over-the-top roles for an expandable cast, there’s a part for everyone in this dazzling adventure story.”
Musical Theatre Company (MTC) Program Information
Our MTC program features two streams, offering unique opportunities for participants to shine:
Cast: Performers in this stream make up the cast of the musical production - they play key roles, and an audition is required for entry.
Chorus: This group of students will form the vocal chorus and join the main cast for several featured numbers. They support the main cast, and get a taste for being on the big stage! No audition required for entry
*Note: Cast placement is determined thorugh the audition process. If you audition for the Cast and aren’t placed in a Cast role this season, you’ll automatically be welcomed into the Chorus - an integral part of the MTC company with plenty of opportunities to sing, dance, and grow!

She may appear to be an ideal princess straight from the fairy tale books, but there is more to her than that stereotypical image. She is an audacious young lady with a wonderful sense of humour and - surprisingly - manners akin to those of a teenage boy. Casting a girl who can do it all: act, sing and dance. This is a premiere role for an experienced performer with a loveable spirit.

A brash, loud, fast-talking animal with no concept of "quiet time." Cast an experienced performer who can sing well and has a whole lot of presence and character. Casting a performer who complements Shrek well as his loyal and ever-faithful sidekick.
*remember to include a song of choice in your audition
-
A breakout role for a young girl with a lot of soul and spunk. She is a ferocious fire-breathing dragon but finds a surprising love in Donkey. Casting a performer who has tremendous presence and a good pop singing voice.

-
The wooden boy who cannot tell a lie without being belied by his growing nose. Above are the roles we will use to gather audition submissions. Other roles that we’ll be casting for include:
Storytellers
Wonderful roles for performers with natural stage presence and big, clear voices. These characters are important for setting up the world and moving the story forward - casting some bold, engaging and energetic actors.
Young Fiona + Teen Fiona
Casting solid singers and harmonizers for ‘I Know it’s Today’ trio.
Mama Ogre, Papa Ogre and Baby Ogre
Good roles for a dynamic group that can kick off the show with a lot of energy and presence. Casting strong vocalists with convincing stage presence and humour
Captain of the Guard
This role is just right for an actor with some inherent strength and authority. He or she doesn't have to have a lot of stage experience; castring somebody who has a big, booming voice and who isn't scared to put all the Fairy Tale Creatures in their place.
Knights
The Dragon's background singers who all tried at some point to save Fiona from her tower but were held hostage by the Dragon. Casting performers who can sing well and have some soul just like the Dragon, looking for strong dancers
Dwarf
Farquaad's comparably short and grumpy father. This is a perfect cameo role for a young performer.
Please pick the material from the above materials menu that best shows off who you are and what you bring to the table - even if you’re auditioning for a role that you may not prefer, we use those submissions to cast the aforementioned roles as well.

FAQ
-
Please learn ALL songs provided for the character you are auditioning for. Reminder that each audition is required to have a song of choice as well
-
You are only required to learn and perform the provided excerpts for the songs. Please consult the score/sheet music provided to see the section of the song we’ll be looking for. You can find the time stamps by practicing along with the guide vocal track - those will apply to the performance track you’ll use for the audition tape.
-
Please sing only what is labelled as the character you are auditioning for. Blank space in a song is a great chance to show us your listening and reacting skills. Place yourself in the number and become your character - you can show us your understanding of character both while you are singing and while you are ‘waiting’.
-
If you have a friends of family member that can be off-camera reading the lines of other characters in your script. awesome! It’s up to you whether you look at them or just off them off camera as a voice as you picture your scene partner. Either way. make sure you’re looking above the camera and not off to whoever is reading. If you don’t have someone to read the other lines, no problem! Still wait as if the line is being said, and use that time to react and stay in the flow of conversation.
-
You can record your dance material submission over the music in the video provided. Just be sure to not be watching the video during your recording. We want to see you PERFORM the number to the camera!
-
Choose any song that showcases the individuality of your voice and personality! It can be anything from a radio pop song to a country song to another musical theatre selection. We’d love you to do 1:00 minute of the song to a karaoke track so we can really hear you shine. Choose any song that you love to sing, that is in your range, and that is appropriate for your age.
